Vera H. Price, M.D.

Dr. Vera H. Price is Professor of
Clinical Dermatology in the Department of Dermatology, University of California,
San Francisco (UCSF). She is Director of both the UCSF Hair Research Center
and the Hair and Nail Clinic. Dr. Price received her medical degree from
the University of Toronto and interned at the Toronto General Hospital.
She then trained in Internal Medicine at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver
and in Dermatology at the New York University Postgraduate Medical School.
After moving with her family to San Francisco, she spent three years doing
basic research on the structure and biochemistry of hair in the Wool and
Mohair Laboratory at the Western Regional Research Laboratory of the United
States Department of Agriculture in Berkeley, California.
Dr. Price's research interests include immunologic and genetic factors
in alopecia areata, hormonal regulation of the hair follicle, structural
hair shaft anomalies, quantitative methods of estimating hair growth,
and special aspects of Afro American hair. She is credited with describing
several new hair disorders. She has been a visiting professor and lecturer
at numerous universities and hospitals in the United States and abroad
and has served as a Director of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Dr. Price is Co Founder of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation
(NAAF), has voluntarily served as Chairman of the Board of Directors since
NAAF's inception in 1981, and continues to serve on the Scientific Advisory Council as Immediate Past Chair. During the Foundation's
eighteen years of existence, Dr. Price has devoted thousands of hours
to make the Foundation successful in both its research efforts and its
support of persons with alopecia areata. Dr. Price served on the organizing
committee of the three International Research Workshops on Alopecia Areata
in 1990, 1994, and 1998.
